The 2005 controversy over cartoons featuring the Prophet Muhammad, published in a Danish newspaper, introduced the public to the notion that Islam forbids depictions of Muhammad. But art historian Christiane Gruber begs to differ, stating: “Rarely do journalists, readers and the public at large ask themselves: Does Islam really ban images of Muhammad? The short and simple answer is no.”
